Three young siblings begin their day together as one carefully cradles the baby while the middle child looks on. This painting was meant to capture the extraordinary beauty found in ordinary moments -- like meals shared on quiet mornings, the responsibility older children often embrace, and the simple joy of togetherness.

As the painting gets started, I do a detailed sketch of all the elements to scale.
Once I'm happy with the sketch, I start working on the shadows and highlights of each face and overall skin tone. I also add some loose details and color for the background.
Generally I work on a painting from back to front and top to bottom.
Now that all of the major elements are mapped in, I spend more time on the details and refining. (This one took a while with all those toes in the final painting above.)
